PC Hardware Repair Guide

PC's are actually much easier to repair than they were in the late 1990’s .Most Computer Hardware Problems can be repaired, we are able to troubleshoot and problem solve most issues, we carry a full range of parts on our van for repairs and upgrades to most PC's on day of visit. Typical problems are blown power supplies, mother board failure or hard drive failures.

Excluding cables, there are only 15 or so discrete components in a modern PC, and that total includes the computer keyboard and mouse! This is how we are able to carry most of the commonest parts with us on our vans.

You still have to be able to diagnose the fault, and many people are more than a little nervous about taking the case off the computer and diving into its entrails. You do need a wide range of parts to cover all the possibilities, and unless you have them to hand, doing a pc hardware repair can be frustrating. Some of the really tough problems are intermittent, so diagnosing the problem correctly is actually the main challenge.

Computer hardware problems are less common than software problems, and there are far fewer variables to consider when troubleshooting and fixing PC hardware. The real trick is to go about it in a systematic matter, eliminating possibilities whenever possible then changing the likeliest parts.

The Power Supply

Some of the commonest PC hardware repairs are due to failure of the power supply. You need to confirm that it is operating properly as a starter. It can even be the AC power supply that is the problem – a great solution if you have a client staring at a dead PC! Power supplies can give the false impression that other components are failing as they often fail gradually, giving rise to symptoms that appear to be caused by individual component failure.

Motherboard and CPU

Diagnosing a mother board problem can be far more difficult than a power supply. If you want to learn how to repair PC's without swapping every part, it's critical to know what to look for on a powered up system, like a CPU fan that isn't running, or RAM that stays cold. Sometimes you can spot a blown capacitor on a motherboard, but it's not a common problem.

Hard Drive Failure

Hard drives are probably the most reliable component in the PC, but are a potential disaster if they fail and the data is not backed up or if a ghost system on another hard drive is not available. I don't mean that hard drives last longer than memory modules or video cards in the pure Mean Time Between Failure sense, it's just that they are rarely at fault when you're called in to repair PC hardware. Hard drive failures are generally pretty easy to troubleshoot, in part because the operating system will include tools to report on the hard drive's reliability when it's accessible.
